The Malbaie V Residence, Quebec

Le-Phare-Residence-11

This is pretty close to my dream house and location.  I don’t love the furnishings (too much black), but geez, this is one beautiful and eco-friendly house. Text and images from Freshome: Located in the picturesque region of Cap-à-l’Aigle in the heart of Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada, the The Malbaie V residence was Montreal-based studio Mu Architecture and displays an inspiring design. The exterior is defined by simple geometrical volumes wrapped in wood and a green roof that insulates the building. Here is more regarding the structure of the residence from the architects: “On the ground...

James Turrell

"I put you in a situation where you feel the physicality of light. This is an art that people try to touch - but there’s nothing there to touch. There is, in fact, no object; there is no image, nor any place of focus. What are you then looking at? Well, I’m hoping that you then have the self-reflexive act of looking at your looking, so that you’re actually seeing yourself see to some degree, so that it actually does reveal something about your seeing as opposed to being a journal of my seeing."

Katrin Brack, Stage Designer

2

I came across Katrin’s work whilst browsing the Goethe-Institut website.  I am pretty obsessed with the concept of en-masse design.  I know it isn’t anything particularly unique these days, but I still love it.  Stuff en-masse almost always looks great and is super evocative.  Anyway, it seems to be a bit about what she’s about.  I love the clarity that comes with her work.  Here are some pics. Krankenzimmer Nr. 6 Der Fall Esra Anatol Tartuffe (what a bloody perfect choice of en-masse material for this show) Das Grosse Fressen Wow,...

Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez

I do adore images like these.  I think I feel drawn to them because they are the kind of thing that is a real super challenge to replicate in a theatrical context.  These magical fantasy worlds are the creative work of Manuel Rodríguez Sánchez. The graphic design student and photography enthusiast skillfully crafts his own worlds, making great use of clouds, textures and contrast.  Found via My Modern Metropolis. Full collection at manurs.com.

The Making of Bad Theatre

Before I start on this rant, let me say that I am going to try to be as objective as possible regarding my definition of “good” and “bad” theatre.  I am very choosy with theatre that I see and there are often very specific things that need to be fulfilled in order for me, personally, to consider it of good quality.  That said, I think that maybe I can try to define what I mean by “bad” theatre in a way that many might agree with. Bad theatre to me is, primarily, theatre without a purpose.  Someone thinks it would be cool to produce a play.  They have no money. ...

Rolf Sachs

Rolf Sachs, Light Chemistry

My internet is being a piece of shit today, so I’m not able to research this particular artist as much as I would like to (as his website takes up too much bandwidth).  It seems that he is an all-round designer, and I haven’t yet looked at his furniture/object stuff, but his LIGHT FIXTURES!  Oh, his light fixtures!  They are truly beautiful.  So, go check out his website, particularly the lighting section. Thanks to @niklaspajanti for the link.

The Company, Bring To Light NYC

The Company 2 – Elli & Cuius

The Company: A Video of Light The Company was a lighting installation made of 76 tungsten lamps that formed a catenary arch. It was commissioned by NYC’s Bring to Light festival earlier this month and used as a backdrop for artistic performances. Located at a former East River industrial area, the installation reflected an architectural legacy, like a machine delivered to occupy what was once a bustling industrial environment. The project was completed by creative coder Andrea Cuius and designer Roland Ellis. ‘By either producing sounds or reacting to the inputs from the environment,...
